Cholera Outbreak in Haiti and How You Can Help

“Cholera is an infection of the small intestine. The main symptoms are profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Transmission is primarily through contaminated drinking water or food. The severity of the diarrhea and vomiting can lead to rapid dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Primary treatment is with oral or intravenous re-hydration solutions. Antibiotics may be beneficial, and in certain cases, are used.” taken from wikipedia.

Disasters seem to pile one on another in Haiti.  Not only is the situation in post-earthquake Port-au-Prince still desperate with hundreds of thousands still homeless, hungry and without adequate sanitation, but in the city of St Marc, some 50 miles or so north of PAP along the coast, a severe outbreak of cholera is suddenly claiming hundreds of lives.  Due to the dire circumstances in Haiti, once someone has the symptoms of cholera, they can be dead in a day from the severe dehydration.  They are piling up bodies faster than they can be buried once more.

Antibiotics and IV fluids are needed in the worst way, and they are needed NOW!!!   The most effective oral antibiotic is doxycycliine, but many are too sick to keep it down, so IV or IM Rocephin is a great substitute.

Dr. Joey Prosper is in St. Marc helping with this epidemic.  He works directly with Angel Missions Haiti and Vanessa Carpenter.  AMH and Vanessa are dear friends of Dr. Bob and work closely with MOL.

We are requesting funds to be sent directly to AMH so that more meds and IV fluids can be purchased.  In Dr. Joey”s words “We can not wait for the Global Community to respond, this outbreak only started Tuesday Oct. 19 and we already have more than 185 bodies in just 4 days.  Waiting on meds to be shipped in and gotten through customs will cost hundreds if not hundreds of thousands of lives. “
